Several years ago, I was approached by a group of video game creators (Numinous Games). They were looking for a singer-songwriter who’d score a new project they were working on called Our Life.
Our Life has a rich, emotional center to it, focusing on marriage. A cooperative game, where two players would each have an iPad or phone as their device and play simultaneously, you’d explore the beauty and pain a couple experiences in marriage over the course of a lifetime.
I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited to be involved in a project.
Brock, the lead creator of this project from Numinous Games, also has a large family, so we related on many different facets of family life; the joys and difficulties, and highs and lows, of a good marriage. Music is a big part of he and Vanessa’s life, so he really wanted Our Life to feel almost like a musical as you journeyed through. That’s why they had approached me, rather than someone who usually scores games like these.
So, I wrote some songs.
The team LOVED the soundtrack that was being created.
And they worked on getting funding.
There were some bites, including Apple taking a look at the project for their arcade. Then, the pandemic came along and really has stalled everything out. In my heart, I truly hope the project is still a possibility! I’m thrilled to be involved with the game- the spirit behind it is personally resonant for me.
In the course of working on Our Life, I had a chance to finish this song last year, “Stay with Me”. Aub Connolly is on cello and the duet vocals. We recorded with Dave Wilton in Lafayette, CO and he got the feel JUST right for the song. I’m a huge fan of retro synth sounds alongside dark piano… I was so happy with the instrumentation here!
I wanted you all to get a first listen. I plan on releasing this song on iTunes and Spotify soon. It’ll be included on a new album coming out titled, “A Stranger’s Guide to Midwestern Trees”. But until then, please enjoy this single!
